Some thoughts about cryptocurrencies

I am one of these people who believe that money isn’t real. So when it comes to cryptocurrencies, I have a very strong opinion about it.

It is easy to guess that I’m completely against cryptocurrencies.
First of all, as I said, I don’t believe that money is real. In my opinion, it’s just an illusion that human beings created, and that’s now destroying them. Of course, it is useful and required to live, but only because everyone uses it. Without humans, money wouldn’t have any value, it wouldn’t even exist. With crypto, it’s even worse, because the money actually isn’t real, it’s only digital.

To continue, I’m also terrified by the climate crisis. Cryptocurrencies are an environmental disaster. For instance, Bitcoin mining CO2 emissions are higher than Argentina’s emissions.
With NFTs, the problem is worse than before, because now people destroy their future for some ugly JPEG of tired monkeys.

Finally, I’m not a big fan of digitalizing everything. It makes people even more vulnerable and dependent on technology. I mean, when you have a bunch of money in your hand, you only have to be careful not to lose it. When you have it stored digitally, you have to have a safe password, to store this password in a safe place, to trust the service that you use, etc.

To conclude, I think that we should think about solving actual problem that are caused by capitalism and money, such as poverty and inequalities, before trying to develop new ways to buy and sell things, which makes capitalism work.

Gay and lesbian marriage is now legal in Switzerland !

Last sunday, the swiss people voted in favour of the marriage for two people of the same sex. It’s the first time in my life that I’m actually proud of the country I live in.

Why was I afraid?

I was afraid that this law might not be accepted, because some homophobic, far-right groups and politicians started to say foolish arguments against it, and that one of these political groups is the most popular in Switzerland.

Although it is clear that today, almost nobody would go out in the streets and say “I’m homophobic”, there are probably still a lot of people who are. These people are too afraid to confess it in front of people, because it would be politically incorrect to say such things, but it doesn’t change what they think.

So, what now?

Well, now, I just can’t say how happy I am ! Finally, a right that was already acquired in other countries is now acquired in Switzerland too !

I don’t want to specify my sexual orientation on this blog, but I’m happy for all the LGBTQIA+ people I know, and I’m also happy for the future generations. I hope that this right will also come into other countries, so that it could become a world-wide right.

How I left GAFAM and discovered FOSS development - Part 2

Installing Linux

A week after deleting my Microsoft account, I decided to install a Linux distribution on my laptop. I first wanted to install Ubuntu, but my device was not supported (I think it had to do with my Nvidia GPU). I wanted to learn command-line and cyber-security, so I decided to install Kali Linux.

After a month, I broke my system by installing packages with
make install
and from untrusted sources. At this time, I didn’t really understand how Linux works. As my system was broken, I decided to install Pop!_OS after a little time of distro-hopping. I used it for almost 6 months after that.

Git & Python

Right after I installed Pop!_OS, I created my first Python script. It retrieved the tracker list from the Exodus Privacy website and created an ad-blocker filter with that. That filter was for my personal use, as I didn’t understand licenses.

Then I decided to create some ad-blocker filters just with my personal knowledge: Twann’s Filters, that I released into the public domain. I created my repository on Github, because I didn’t know that it was owned by Microsoft. I started to learn Git, as well as Python (and a bit of PHP).

What about my phone ?

During summer 2020, I decided to install LineageOS on my phone. It was stressful, because I knew it could cause my device to bootloop, or even not to work anymore. But I did it successfully, and it made me very proud of myself.

Oh crap… Github is Microsoft

At the end of summer 2020, I saw that Github was owned by Microsoft. The same day, after searching for a few alternatives, I moved all my projects to gitlab.com, and I deleted my account on Github.

My main project - TBlock

I never liked ads or tracking, and my dream project was to create my own ad-blocker myself. I decided to start working on TBlock, which stands for (Twann Block). It is a little egocentric, I agree, but at this time, my project wasn’t meant to be used by others than me.

It took me a month, and the result was horrible. I didn’t even push any commit to the upstream repository. At this time, my ad-blocker stored domains to block into a simple JSON file, under:
~/.tblock/
. The problem was that it was too slow to parse the entire file and to write the domains into the hosts file. The JSON file was also very large, so I started to work on other projects and left my original project.

After a while, I heard about SQLite, so I decided to write TBlock again from scratch, but with SQLite instead of JSON. The result was horrible, because I was committing the changes to the database after adding each rule. So, if the ad-blocker had to add 50'000 rules from a filter, it actually commited the changes to the database 50'000 times. It was really slow, so I did like the last time: I forgot this project, and I thought that it was too hard for me.

Manjaro

When my Pop!_OS system broke (I was responsible for that, though), I decided to install a more complex system. I tried to install Arch Linux inside a VM, but I wasn’t able to do it. I decided to install Manjaro (with GNOME) on my laptop, to learn a bit more how Arch Linux works.

Joining the Fediverse

Joining the Fediverse (only Mastodon) was a big step for me, and it was wonderful to see people like me everywhere. I joined the instance fosstodon.org, and I was impressed by how people were nice to each other, which is the opposite of Twitter. Then I heard about Codeberg…

Why I am anonymous

As a developer, I am trying to stay anonymous.

For example, I don’t want people to know my gender. That’s why my pronouns are:
they/them
.

Yet there are some information that I don’t hide, for example the fact that I live in Switzerland, or my political opinion.

I want to stay anonymous for several reasons.

To define a limit between tech and my private life

First of all, it defines a limit between my private life and my developer life. When I become Twann, I do tech-related things, which I don’t do when I’m the real person I am. That way, it’s much easier to manage the time I spend in front of a computer.

I don’t want people to judge my work because of me

I do what I do because I like it, and I like helping people. What I hate is being judged, or judge others. I want people to use my software because it works well, oe because they like using it, but not because of the person I am. I also don’t want to see people not using my software because they think I don’t look nice, for example.

I don’t want to be rich or famous

Unlike billionaires like Bill Gates orJeff Bezos, I don’t want to be rich or famous, especially not with my developer projects. Staying anonymous is one of the best way not to get known. Even though I can become famous as a developer, I won’t be famous as a person, and that’s what is important to me.

Because of my political opinion

As I’m anti-capitalist and anti-militarist, the governement could try to trace me and to profile me (because they think that I’m like a “threat” to the country). I simply want to protect myself, and I also don’t want to make things too easy for the governement :)

How I left GAFAM and discovered FOSS development - Part 1

Back in 2019, I was using all sorts of crap provided by the GAFAM.
I was using Windows as my default OS, I had a Google and a Microsoft account, an Googled Android phone, and accounts on social medias like Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat and WhatsApp, for sure.

It started with a homework

One day, I had to do a presentation about the Internet and how it can be dangerous as part of my studies.
So I started to search for information about it, and then I discovered a website: https://tosdr.org. I was shocked. The website was actually summarizing the privacy policy of every single service I was using, and they were all really bad.

I discovered alternatives to Google Search

The next day, I found the AlternativeTo website. It provided a list of aternatives to Google and such, and I started using Ecosia and DuckDuckGo, because they were more privacy-friendly than Google.

I started using Tor

One day I heard about the Tor Network. I decided to use it, so that my operating system (Windows) would not be able to see my browsing activity anymore.

Lockdown, encryption, Linux

Yet came 2020 and the covid pandemic with it. During the lockdown, I was forced to use Zoom, but I also learnt about FOSS softwares, especially GNU/Linux operating systems. I also began to hate capitalism, and big tech companies with it.

I was using Snapchat because I thought it was a secure and private messenger. But when I understood that chats weren’t end to end encrypted, I decided to leave it. I also realised that I wasn’t really friend with some people I was chatting with on Snapchat.

Because I hated Windows, and I was trying to improve my privacy, I decided to use a virtual machine with Tails installed inside it, which made me discover the power of Linux. Right after that, I created a second VM, which was running Ubuntu.

The day I left Google and Microsoft

I have always been trying to protect out environment. And I knew that the 10GB of my Google Cloud were not sustainable. I decided to buy a hard drive, which I encrypted with VeraCrypt. I downloaded all of my Google data, and I put them on that hard drive.
After that, I deleted my account, and, as I didn’t have an Email address anymore, I registered a new one on ProtonMail.

I did the same with my Microsoft account, and I created a local account on my Windows computer.

A week later, I was installing Linux on my laptop…

I’m an anonymous and anarchist developer, living in Switzerland. My pronouns online are: they/them.

I use Artix Linux with KDE Plasma on my computer, and I love FLOSS. I mainly code in Python, but I’m learning JavaScript and Rust right now. I like minimalism, and I strongly believe in freedom, privacy and decentralization. I hate big tech companies, and I use copyleft licenses whenever it is possible. You can see a list of my projects and those who I contributed to here.

I believe in anarchism, and I’m also feminist, environmentalist, antiracist, anticapitalist, antifascist and for LGBTQIA+ rights.

This blog is about technology (mostly FLOSS-related stuff) and my political opinion. It uses no analytics at all and you can subscribe to its RSS feed here.
