It turns out I'm kind of a chicken when it comes to hostile mobs. This MineClone 2 mod defines a sc_chicken:chicken_feet armor item that can be equipped as boots. It should reduce most damage. If I can get the hang of playing with this, then maybe I'll change it to let a fraction of the damage through, or set a floor for HP.
