Gravatar images #762

I noticed that a lot of sites use this service to display profile pictures (like Wordpress, Gitlab, Forums, etc) so a lot of connections with this third party are made.

Perhaps LocalCDN can improve this situation? Replacing the images with some generic ones?

Example in https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/217#note_355246:

First of all, thanks for your idea and the good explanation 👍

You are absolutely right, the Gravatar avatars are often on websites. I have blocked them completely with a uBlock rule. uBlock Origin makes sure that the placeholder of the images is also removed, so no placeholder would be necessary at all. (See screenshot)

Try that out and see if that might be a better solution:

  • Open uBlock Origin Settings
  • Switch to tab "My filters"
  • Append ||secure.gravatar.com/avatar/*
  • Click "Apply changes"
