Some folks across different channels have made the remark 404.city use CAPTCHA and other google services on their infrastructure and therefore cannot be considered privacy-friendly, despite having a very user-friendly privacy policy.

Additionally, some more servers were proposed to be added:

  • yaxim.org: unclear
    - snopyta.org: bus (CLOSED REGISTRATIONS)
  • trashserver.net: bus
  • dismail.de: bus (CLOSED REGISTRATIONS)
  • blabber.im: bus (CLOSED DOWN DUE TO PERSONAL REASONS)
  • suchat.org
  • tchncs.de: bus
  • movim.eu: privacy
  • jix.im: bus privacy
  • hot-chilli.net: 3rdparty sustainable
  • hookipa.net: bus
  • jabbim.cz
  • nixnet.services: bus

I added to the following tags to proposed servers:

  • bus for bus factor: i.e. just one person operating the server
  • privacy for privacy policy: what is this server doing with data?
  • 3rdparty for using 3rd party scripts/resources on the homepage (eg. CAPTCHA)
  • unclear for a website whose information is unclear
  • sustainable for unclear business model with a for-profit entity (how to ensure services will be up 10y from now if only business counts?)

As we don't have established criteria just yet, please comment your thoughts on each of those providers here

So for me, snopyta.org, dismail.de blabber.im and suchat.org look perfect.

I have concerns about:

  • yaxim.org - their homepage is for a client not a server, it's not very clear where to find more information about the server and privacy policy
  • trashserver.net - appears to have exactly 1 person running it, i'm not comfortable to recommend a service with bus factor = 1
  • tchncs.de - same as above

Maybe movim.eu (both client and server).

A friend of mine is using: https://jix.im/ and that also seems to work well (same developer as the nice ejabberd wordpress plugins). But also seems to be a one man show.

movim.eu

About the client it's an entirely different discussion. Can we find more information about the server? (see above)

jix.im

No information about who is operating it, logging policy, privacy policy. Maybe we can ask the admin(s) to provide such information?

snopyta.org and dismail.de are bus factor = 1 as well

Another candidate:

  • Hot-Chilli (provides service under multiple domains)
Another candidate: * [Hot-Chilli](https://jabber.hot-chilli.net) (provides service under multiple domains)

hot-chilli.net

From privacy policy, it appears their privacy policy is strong legalese language (not understandable by users) and only covers their website. Is there a link to privacy policy of Jabber server and/or logging policy?

Also, as they are a for-profit company, is there a link to their economic model and how they intend to stay alive over time?

OK i removed privacy for hot-chilli. there's still google stuff loaded on their homepage (3rdparty) and i'm waiting for feedback on their economic model.

Might be a candidate for the activist category. But I don't see if they have a .onion service.
