Fosshost has announced that they were shutting down. They first said "any day now" and then things got a bit smoother and we are supposed to get a notification at some point.
In the meantime, we need to figure out what to do. There are two main solutions:
Find another machine (even just a VPS)
Find mutualised (managed) services, where we can point our DNS to.
Mutualised services would allow us to:
Avoid wasting resources that we don't use on the machine.
Lower maintenance cost as it's not our infra anymore.
Places like Codeberg pages and JabberFR hosting were proposed to move our two main services.
Having our own VPS would allow us to:
Keep some (relative) control over the infrastructure
Automation. It seems easier to just run Ansible scripts, or anything we want to ensure stuff is installed and running the way we want it.
Avoid centralisation. Codeberg and JabberFR are somewhat big places already and I'd rather not invite a lot more people in there anymore. (This also speaks to us using Codeberg as a forge, but that's for another day).
Fosshost is offering free of charge hosting. Finding the same kind of hosting would be great but I'm not so optimistic.
I can manage the cost for some time if it's just a lower-end VPS (~5EUR/month) but I'd appreciate help for sure.
This is not to say mutualised services would all be free anyway, but it seems easier to find places that propose it for free.
Mutualised places also mentioned:
fly.io
tuxfamily
cheogram

Uberspace.de would be another option for a mutalized place. Its AFAIK not free but "pay-what-you-want" (1€/month minimum?) and comes with some limitations of it's own, see for example: https://lab.uberspace.de/guide_prosody/
So it might be the worst of both worlds... but it is also cheaper than a VPS.
