Feature Request: Support for displaying the "Generic" Name field #72

Sometimes the application name does not communicate clearly what it does.

For example, the name "Swappy" sounds like it might have to do with swap space, but it's actually for annotating screenshots.

Here's an example screenshot from Rofi that shows both "Desktop Action" entries appearing and also the "GenericName" in a slightly smaller font in parens

My apologies for the poor contrast. The broken theme is a reason I'm looking for a replacement!

Fuzzel actually used to do this... don't remeber why I removed it.

I don't see why we can't bring it back though. The main (design) question is how much configuration to enable (i.e fonts, colors etc).

For example, just using an italic, maybe smaller, but otherwise the same font as the name/title, would be pretty easy to implement. Perhaps that's where we should start. Configuration options can always be added later.

I do think however that we need at least one conf option: to enable/disable displaying the generic name.

I thought about this more overnight. The most valuable part is to be able to search for the "generic name" which already works.

Displaying the generic name is like training wheels-- it's important the first few times you launch an app, but soon you will remember what the apps do. After that, the design is cleaner and less cluttered without the generic names being displayed.

Even if you can't remember that your webcam app is named "Cheese", you would still find it by searching for "webcam". Once the filtered results show you "Cheese", you'll realize that must be the webcam app.

In summary, while I got to used to seeing the generic names with Rofi, I think once I adjust I think will prefer not displaying the generic name!

Another idea which provides utility with minimal visual clutter is to only display the generic name once the result has been filtered to a single item, as happens with the large icon. Like displaying the large icon, it provides a kind of final confirmation that you've selected the right thing before you press enter. So perhaps the generic name could appear under the large icon.

I still think it might be useful to, at least optionally, be able to display the generic name.

But let's down prioritize this for now.
