When will you release version 1.8 (or 1.9) #31

I'm keen to try out the new MicroG settings which are apparently coming with v1.8

I looked at releases but we're still at 1.7, while there's a branch for 1.9. Are you skipping 1.8? When will you release the next version? Thanks!

We'll follow upstream. They haven't release 1.8 yet... so I guess it's not yet deemed stable?

They just started scheduling work for 1.11 though, while concurrently working on 1.10, 1.9 and I guess still on 1.8... They also have RC's for 1.8.1 and 1.9.1 ... and no we don't have any idea why any of this makes sense... :D.

Next release will be 1.9.1(?): https://www.coronawarn.app/de/blog/2020-12-16-corona-warn-app-version-1-9/

Which is very confusing and a bit unexpected... We'll work on integrating this.

SAP so confusing...

I was actively following the SAP CWA repo back in June. One thing that was frustrating back then, and is still not really solved, is that there are no beta releases for public testing.

I was thinking: Could we actually use CCTG for that purpose? One problem was, that the ENF only allows whitelisted apps to interact with it, so one would have had to mock the ENF, which is silly. Now with MicroG, CCTG is actually the perfect vehicle for allowing the interested public to beta test CWA changes - despite SAPs refusal to release beta versions. I see, they're doing a "controlled rollout". Weird that they do that, but not release beta versions. Distrust of the community?

I'd be very interested in trying out beta versions, seeing how bad SAP is at QAing their versions. All you'd have to do, really, is make beta builds of their rcs. That would also incidentally allow us to beta test not only SAPs changes, but also MicroG, making CCTG potentially more stable for everyone.

Is that something you'd be interested in doing? If I'm not missing anything, it shouldn't be too much effort.

mh- over at Github is working on making his Corona Warn App Companion take in collected keys from CCTG. I'm greatly looking forward to seeing that work together. Finally, it'll be possible to get fine-grained information without needing a) root or b) having Ramble on all the time.

If we were to publish beta versions for upstream's RCs, the thing I'd be most concerned about is that users would have to report the issues which they are experiencing to us, so that we could decide whether they are related to our changes or are actually upstream issues and then file them there. I'd rather not do that and focus on more interesting things.

Good point @fynngodau

What about using the most up to date MicroG code for an early release version in addition to stable CCTG? Apparently they added the export feature just now.

Soon, though as is usual with F-Droid, it always takes a few days.

I just added this to our FAQ :D

After some time, the latest version also appears in the official F-Droid repository, though as usual for F-Droid, this can take a while.
