CCTG needs location (Standort) but CWA works without #248

Why does the latest version 2.14.1.3 of the Corona Contact Tracing Germany still need the GPS / location / Standort for tracking BT contacts ?

The official CWA (from which CCTG is a clone ???) works without - just having BT activated is sufficient there.

Especially so on Android12 (but I think even much before Android12) …

The explanation lies in https://codeberg.org/corona-contact-tracing-germany/cwa-android#why-does-the-app-need-location-permission and #176, as it appears to be the same for permissions as for having location services enabled. Please see there, thanks.

This should be fixed for Android 12+ with the new version 2.21. There's nothing we can do for ealier versions.

@j123 It's available here: https://bubu1.eu/cctg/fdroid/repo/?fingerprint=f3f30b6d212d84aea604c3df00e9e4d4a39194a33bf6ec58db53af0ac4b41bec

Hmm, I followed steps until
3) Choose F-Droid (then click Just Once ?).
4) When the Add new repository screen appears, click Add.

But now, what should happen ?
In F-Droid, CCTG still show version 2.18...

?
sorry ...

@j123 If the repo has been added successfully and has showed up in the repositories screen, simply pull-to-refresh to sync our repo and the version should show up.

Sorry, I seem to be too unexperienced.
In F-Droid, I now have the additional "Paketquelle" bubu1...
which states that it has never been used and needs to be activated to show apps.
There is no repo sync or whatever button. Only share/NFC/delete ...
Which GUI / tool are you referring to ?
What do I need to do in which tool ?

Which GUI / tool are you referring to ?

I am assuming that you are using the official F-Droid app, which is correct.

which states that it has never been used and needs to be activated to show apps.

You are looking at the right screen. Can't you just activate the repo there?

Then, head back to the "main screen" and pull down to refresh if it doesn't do that on its own.

Yes, the official F-Droid.
OK, finally the pull down on the main screen (not under Settings > My apps)
triggered the update. Thanks !!!

But also in version 2.21 under Android 12, the location is required for BT tracking ???

What do you mean by location is required? The app doesn't have the location permission under android 12, so it cannot use any location.

I thought the remark on 2.21 would refer to this earlier entry:

The FAQ article which you linked was indeed outdated, as I forgot to update it; sorry for that. #176 has been fixed and also no longer applies. There are no more obstacles regarding location permissions. I haven't tried whether you will actually be able to collect IDs with disabled location services, which was what this thread was originally about, but I would suspect so and you are welcome to try (I'm also not sure how the UI behaves then, it may claim that this does not work).

CCTG on Android 12 complains very loudly (both on the app as well as on microG level) when you have location services disabled. As far as I can tell it still works correctly.

Great - it really complains but the statistics looks like it is collecting BT contacts.
So, we can use it without location and just ignore the warning :-)
Thanks !!!

I'll reopen this, as the current behaviour is very confusing to users. (also today microG only showed collecting encounters after enabling location services just now, while it was working correctly for the last couple of days without. I did enable airplane mode overnight, and disabling that might not have restarted ble scanning without enabling location services at least briefly.)
