Polls should have better defaults #9286

I think having polls end 'never' by default is a bad choice, it should default to something like "end after 4 days," also making it easier for users to not have to open an un-necessary menu.

Never ending polls are actually showcased on the polls section of explore, so I think it's fine

I feel like having a neverending poll leads to posts having inaccurate data over time - say someone's asking what peoples' idea of a video game that just came out is, and a few months later some people find the post and change the entire results of what the poll looked like after the initial like 3 days. You can't really tell what it initially was and the new votes make it confusing.

I also like getting notifications when polls end, so that I can check what people thought of the prompt.

And the reactions you made are no longer valid, and you would have to make a screenshot to prove and documented which values it was at that time.

I also like getting notifications when polls end, so that I can check what people thought of the prompt.

Big +1.
It's also a way for participants to get the results without having to bookmark it and come back later when they think about it.

I think I also agree with this, I find it useful to get a notification when the poll ends, while on the other hand practically never use the Explore page. Maybe I "should" but I have the tendency to only visit/use the features of the platform that I need to, and kinda ignore the rest, and I think many people function this way.

👍

And appart from the explore page, I wonder why we should have infinite pools by default ?
Long ones, maybe, but is there more situations where you want an infinite pool than situations where you are asking a question in a particular time frame and close the subject afterwards ?
In particular in social networks where time flies fast, content is quite ephemeral and not easy to discover after a few hours/days.

Since we no longer display polls in Explore, I'd like to bring this up again =)

Also, rn when you go to "End after:" the defaults are "0" and "Seconds", which means you are forced to change both. It should at least be "1" and "Days", if we're keeping "Never" as the default. But again I think that, as Via suggested, the default should be something like After 4 (or 5 or 7, whatever) days.
