Yesterday there has been a significant announcement of the Gitea project: Open source sustainment and the future of Gitea. Though many details are as yet unknown it is clear that they will impact the community and ecosystem around the project. Some major points mentioned in the announcement:

  • Gitea project and its trademarks are now part of a for-profit Honk-Kong based company.
  • Gitea now has an enhanced enterprise version (unclear whether this is in an open-core model).
  • Gitea is experimenting with creating a DAO where contributors would receive benefits based on their participation.

There is a Hacker News discussion ongoing as well. I hope that more information will be available very soon. It can be seen that people are worried about the implications.

Creating this issue for discussion how Codeberg and its members / users look towards this development as more information becomes available.
