It is this time of the year again. Non-profits all over the world are going to run their funding campaigns in the pre-xmas season, and so we thought to learn to run our own, if we want to continue to grow and to further professionalize (and everybody wants us to, right?).

Let's face it: we have proven that we are capable of doing many things, but campaigning has not been our most outstanding strength so far. Recognizing our weakness is the first step to overcome it. Let's think about how we can improve on this side too.

We need to think about communication, design banners, decide whether we want this to be tied to a dedicated purpose (a stretch goal like CI/CD infrastructure maybe, or a topic like a legal defense fund), or simply in general support Codeberg.org's goals and strengthen our standing.

For reference, attached the banner Wikipedia is running this year in EU. Let's collect in this issue thread more examples, and ideas how we would like to plan, structure and organize a coming campaign.

FYI. I am slowly collecting resources for delightful-funding and delightful-sustainable-business. Maybe it has something useful, but you can also use it as 'dump' for good resources you find on this quest (i.e. PR's most welcome).

like a legal defense fund

The idea of legal defense fund that GitHub announced is really interesting. I wonder if this can have also negative effect - causing litigation just to "make lawyers work" because they smell money.

Having said that, even with recent "transfer repo to another owner" kind of abuse, having some possible legal umbrella would be good to have.

Just some thoughts on this:

  • Please do not make intrusive popovers like Wikipedia does. I know the discussion over there is very heated, but I'd prefer a smaller header (no larger than the navbar) or maybe some information on the dashboard or login page
  • You might consider doing campaigns not during December. The traditional reason for this is that orgs realize they need more money to start into the next year and they got used to it because people seem some somewhat generous during Christmastime. Personally I don't consider donating during the rest of the year and in this very last month I don't know where to donate first since my financial resources are limited.
What about campaigning at another time of the year?
