Please see my own profile picture. The x-y relation is not correct.

Ah, yeah… there’s no mechanism in the UI to pass along the desired crop coordinates, so they come out as a forced square. It’s a real issue, but in the meantime, you’ll have to cut it square in an editor before uploading :
@buhtz: This is a known bug/missing feature in gogs and gitea, a fix very welcome. For the meantime, @scott-joe’s solution is probably the best workaround.
Can you point to the “gogs” and/or “gitea” bug report please. Thanks.
Please see https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/issues/1268 and the linked issues

Fixed by https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea/pull/7025 in Gitea 1.9.0
will be deployed soonish on main net.
We deployed 1.9 last night, can you re-upload you profile image and test?
Mhm… Not really working.
Looks correct to me now (no distortion, correct aspect, just cropped, as expected)
You are right of course. ;)
But the behaviour that the pic is croped by default should be pointed out to the user when uploading a picture. Kind of “1:1 aspect ratio is recommanded or the pic will be croped automatic”
No due date set.
